What’s the Hype About Tarot? The Reason Goes Deeper Than You Think

Hi, I’m Nay, a professional psychic medium and the founder of Intuitive Readings. I host a weekly segment on A1R Psychic Radio, share Spirit’s messages on my YouTube series Hello From the Otherside, and I’m currently expanding my gifts through a Diploma in Psychic Mediumship with the Psychic Mediumship College. It’s my calling and my joy to help others connect, heal, and find clarity.
There’s so much excitement and curiosity when you first step into the world of spirituality that it can feel like opening a treasure chest. But with all that magic comes the challenge of knowing where to begin when there is so much to learn and explore: pendulums, astrology, dreams, runes, crystals, tarot, numerology... the list goes on and on.

My very first divination tool was tarot. I still vividly remember picking up my older sister’s deck when. I was just five years old. Even at that young age, I instinctively felt it was connected to something higher and angelic, even though no one explained it to me. I tried to read the guidebook, eager to understand, but I couldn’t make sense of any of it. Unfortunately, that early confusion turned me off tarot, and I didn’t pick up another deck until my late 30s.
Now, I won’t claim to be a tarot expert. I haven’t memorised the Hermetic alphabet and I’m not fluent in all the astrological intricacies tied to the cards but I do know my way around a deck, and over time, I’ve learned how to work with tarot in a way that feels powerful, personal, and intuitive.
In this article, I want to share with you what I do know and how you can begin using tarot to transform your life and offer meaningful guidance to those around you.
Tarot vs. Oracle: What’s the Difference?
Tarot cards have a set structure, kind of like a regular deck of playing cards. There are 78 cards in total; 22 are called the Major Arcana and 56 are the Minor Arcana. The Majors usually show big life moments or themes, while the Minors are more about day-to-day stuff and the people or energies around you.
The Rider-Waite deck is the O.G. of tarot. It came out in the early 1900s, so some of the images can be a bit full-on (nudity and dramatic scenes). It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but most modern decks are based on it in some way.

Now, if tarot cards are like playing cards, oracle cards are more like postcards. There’s no set
structure to the number of cards, themes or artwork. Oracle cards are awesome for quick hits of insight or themed messages. Affirmation cards and angel cards are types of oracle cards.
At the end of the day, both tarot and oracle cards are powerful tools in their own way and they work really well together. But remember, they are just tools and there is nothing magical about them. They just allow the person using them to be distracted enough to access their intuition without letting their brain get in the way.
How do you use them?
Simply put, ask a question and pull a card. That’s your answer. Some readers rely heavily on
guidebooks, to tell them the answer but I find the best, fastest and accurate way is to use your
intuition to read a card. This means to call in your guides and ask them to help you understand the meaning of the card. For example, if I ask “What do I need to know today?” and draw the three of swords (a heart with three daggers piercing it), I can derive that there might be a lesson to learn).
Now, I can stop there or I can then consider –
What do I feel immediately?
What colours or symbols stand out?
What is the character doing?
What story is unfolding?
The internal dialogue (inner voice) is your intuition. And that’s the process in a nutshell.
Now, there are loads tips/tricks to get the most out of your readings but below is just a short list of what I do, what works for me. Over time you’ll have your own style.
- Knock hard on your deck before using it to remove stagnant energy.
- Shuffle well. (This puts your energy on all the cards and is important.)
- If you don’t like the answer, don’t ask the same question again. Instead ask “How do I
change this outcome, or feel better about this situation?”
- Store with a piece of selenite crystal on top to keep the energy.
My Favourite Tarot Decks
Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Tarot Deck.

This one’s an absolute gem. Characters like the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, and the Queen of Hearts bring a fun, slightly chaotic energy but don’t let the playfulness fool you. This deck can be brutally honest. The imagery is rich and layered, which makes it perfect for intuitive reads. And honestly? The accuracy is almost creepy.
What I love most is the quirky symbolism, the playful vibe, and how it somehow speaks to both your inner child and your inner mystic.
Rider-Waite Tarot Deck
This is the deck most tarot readers cut their teeth on and as I said above, basically the blueprint for most modern decks. What makes it so great (besides the iconic imagery) is how readable it is. There are loads of learning resources out there because it’s so well-known, but even without a guidebook, the images really speak for themselves.
What I love most is that it’s timeless, full of rich symbolism, and incredibly reliable for clear,
grounded readings. Plus, Spirit often flashes me images from this deck when I’m doing psychic or mediumship work, so it’s like a visual reference guide stored in my brain bank.
How Accurate is tarot?
Tarot and oracle readings can be uncannily accurate. I’ve had cards call me out on things I didn’t want to admit, offer validation for feelings I was doubting, and even hint at future events that came true minutes later.
But here’s the thing: accuracy isn’t really the point.
What matters most is understanding that tarot shows you the energetic potential around a situation, not a fixed outcome. That means you’re not locked into whatever shows up. In fact, once you know what’s likely to happen, you can shift the energy and influence the outcome – that’s the point!
Take my three of swords example. If I pulled that first thing in the morning, I could take it as a ‘heads up’ that the day might be emotionally challenging and I can just ride it out. Alternatively, I might choose to “shake up the energy”, drive to the gym, eat a healthy breakfast and give my dog a big cuddle before I get to work. That conscious choice could shift the energy enough to change my three of swords energy into a four of wands (celebration) energy.

Life doesn’t have to be hard. You wouldn’t drive across town without Google Maps or try to build IKEA furniture without an instruction manual so why wouldn’t you use tools readily available to help you navigate through life too?
Tarot is just one of those tools. And when you learn how to work with it, it can be a total game- changer.
